My Favorite Hiking Place: The Realization that Changed My Life

Hey guys! Today is April 18th and you already know why you’re here today, so lets dive in!

Have you ever looked outside and wondered what to do? You want to get out and do something but you have no idea what you actually want to do. You don’t think you have time to do anything worthwhile because you have work or school, homework or some prior arrangement. This was how I felt just a year ago. I felt stuck in my own mundane reality; living almost every day the same as the one before. I thought that because I always had so much to do that I could enjoy the days that were passing as I wanted to. But then I realized something…

If you don't like the situation you are in, change it. You are in control of your own life.

I saw this quote somewhere online as I was scrolling through images of quotes trying to find something that would inspire me.

I wasn’t looking for something to get out of the life that I was already in but I didn’t quite know what I was looking for either. So, upon reading this and connecting with it so full heartedly I realized that what it said was true. That if I didn’t like my day to day, if I wasn’t spending each day how I wanted to spend it then I needed to take control. I needed to find out how I wanted to live and who I wanted to be.

This sudden and long awaited epiphany began the discovery of Me. I started looking for places that I could connect with. I started doing things that made me happy or that gave me a sense of wonder and curiosity. I realized that the more I did the happier I got and the better my life became.

This brings me to My Favorite Hiking Place.

My favorite hiking place is hidden behind the hill of winding roads on the countryside. From the main (dirt) road you can’t even see that this place exists. However, as I started coming here more I realized that it wasn’t only I who had discovered this Hidden Gem.

So the history behind this place I did some research on because I was genuinely intrigued about what it’s original purpose was. Here is what I found…

In Eastern ON, Canada sits a mountain biking trail. It is a total of 13km and is described as an EPIC ride for anyone who dares to try it. There are trails for beginners, intermediates and experienced MTB. The Terrain is filled with smooth soil, log jumps, crushed gravel, wood chips, bridges, large hills, steep hills, twisty paths, tree roots and rocky patches.

I found this intriguing that my hiking place was so highly written about by others. I decided that others had similar interests to my own and although my Forte isn’t MTB this area was special because it allows individuals, family and groups of friends to escape on the steep hills and twisty paths. This place is a place that one can go to really think or the opposite to let go of your thoughts. This, I thought, was beautiful.

Spring is Extraordinary

Hey guys! Today I am going to be talking about our most recent season here in Canada which happens to be one of my personal favorites. I love spring and I always have. This year with covid and its restrictions I think to many people Spring has taken on new meaning and new purpose…

Spring has always been a time of rebirth and in the world today I think that this season of rebirth has been long awaited and much needed this year…

Spring gives us hope…

We see flowers budding…

Birds chirping…

Trees getting back their foliage.

The rain brings out earthy smells which calm the soul of any adventurer.

Sun shines and warms the earth to allow people to get out and adventure again.

"Spring: a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be." ~GH

This quote has always been super important to me because when I was younger change scared me…

I think change has scared all of us at one time or another but Spring is truly the time to embrace change and to sit back and welcome its beauty.

Rather than January/ “New Years” resolutions which rarely get kept over the course of the year…

I think we should start something called Spring Changes… I think we should all make a change in this beautiful season. And perhaps we might keep that change throughout the year❤

Hidden Gems in Your Own Backyard

Hey guys! So this blog has been getting quite a lot of views so I have decided rather than just on Wednesdays, I will be posting on Sundays!

Now what I post is really going to depend on my week. It could be anything from blogs, to day trip stories, to awareness posts or funny entertainment stories from one of my past trips!

Now on to today’s blog!

Since the beginning of covid I have honestly been extremely depressed. First masks. Then, limited contact. Closed stores. No gyms. 4 people per restaurant. It felt like the world would never be the same and it felt like everything just kept getting taken.

I have always struggled with depression since before I was in middle school. I have symptoms very close to those of BPD but due to past painful experiences I have never been able to stick with a therapist long enough to get diagnosed or to get real help.

Although I have such a high level degree of mental health problems I have always wanted to deal with them naturally.

Being who I am, I found travel, family and friends are the cure.

With covid taking all this away: our contact with people, our right to move freely I will admit I have struggled like I’m sure many others have.

This week I wanted to focus on finding the hidden gems 💎 in our own backyards…

No need to hop on a plane, a bus, a train, a boat…

No need to pay for hotels…

No need to book more than a couple hours of free time.

In my own backyard this week I focused on 3 hidden gems that I would like to share with you to show you just how simple it can be to find somewhere that calms you and makes you happy.

"To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles"

~Mary Davis
"If it weren't for the rocks in its bed, the stream would have no song."

~Carl Perkins
Lastly for this week is this place with a stunning view. To me when I look out at this, I see a place not taken over by the modern Era but a place where caribou might still roam over the many hills. A place where you can overlook the houses and the buildings. This is my favorite hidden gem in my backyard.
"Cherish the natural world, because you're a part of it and you depend on it."

~ David Attenborough

We must live our best lives

Hey guys! Today is April 7th, 2021 and today I’ve decided that I want to discuss the idea of living ones best life. I have been in school for 14 years of my 17 which is a long time. I have nothing against education and in fact I love learning about history and geography and I love reading and writing. I aspire to be an Environmental Scientist which for me is to include 4 years of college. This is where my school education ends but I will forever be learning. On the flip side of going to school and earning an education to do what we want to do with our lives we need to make time to live in the now. I have always greatly valued family, friends, travel, camping, anything outdoorsy and anything that wasn’t precisely planned. There needs to be a healthy balance between your life at work or at school and between getting out and just really living your life with the people who are close to doing all things you love and getting out into the natural world.

There is nothing more exhilarating than standing on the edge of a cliff with the wind blowing in your hair.

There is no feeling greater than standing in the shallows of a beach and feeling the waves beat up against you.

There is nothing more peaceful than the sound of crickets and frogs at night in the summertime

Nothing smells better than the earth after a cool rain

And there is nothing more nostalgic then laying on the grass, unconcerned about bugs or dirt whilst feeling the rays of the warm sun shine down on you

Like this shark in this aquarium people are caged. People in offices constantly have artificial lighting and people everywhere live through the same routines almost each and every day in an oftentimes meaningless cycle.

For awhile I only knew going to school. I woke up at 6am. Was ready by 7am. Borded the bus at 7am almost everytime nearly missing it. Got to school at 8am and was in class my 830am when the first rang.

I know better than this now. I know that this mundane and tedious routine which sucks the spirit, wonder and joy out of life isn’t all there is to life.

I know that you can get an education while travelling. You can study while spending time with family. You can get good grades while hanging out with friends.

If you increase the time you spend with friends and family or the time you have to yourself in nature or doing a sport or a hobby that you love your life at work and at school is much more likely to improve. You are much more likely to get good grades and have a consistent attendance.

Many people wait for weekends. Many others spend their lives at 9-5s and hope that by retirement they will have worked hard enough to earn a pension or worked long enough hours to afford a house on a beach or in the mountains somewhere.

The reality is that this is not likely.

So why waste your life when you could live it?

I hope that you will consider this ideology tomorrow and the next day and for the rest of the week, month and year.

How much of your life have you already wasted not doing what you want to be doing?

If you stay tuned for my next blog on Wednesday the 14th, 2021 I will explain how the life we want to live is just outside our door.
